Read More View Comments | Post a Comment Share: Child airlifted after serious accident in Buford Submitted by 11Alive News Staff Friday, March 11th, 2016, 2:39am BUFORD, Ga.A child has been air-lifted from the scene of an accident that temporarily blocked northbound traffic on Interstate 85 in Buford, Thursday. The accident happened on the interstate near the intersection with Buford Drive. Officials said both a tractor trailer and SUV were involved and that a woman and a child had to be extricated from their vehicle. The child was taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta with critical injuries and the mother was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center with minor or moderate injuries. Cleanup took hours but was completed ahead of the original estimate of 12:30 a.m. 11Alive is still working to gather details. Check back for updates. The shooting happened on Feb. 5 outside of 550 N. Gwinnett Street. One of the victims, 70-year-old Jerry Cantrell, has since died; the other victim is still recovering. An official manner and cause of Cantrell’s death is still pending form the medical examiner’s office, according to police. Initially, investigators labeled the death of Karen Higgins as a homicide. Officers said her body appeared to have some injuries to her body. After an examination by the medical examiner, the officials said the trauma was likely caused by a family pet after her death. Investigators said they are awaiting toxicology results before closing the case. According to police, Higgins’ husband has a medical disability which limits his mobility through the home, and he did not have access to a phone to report his wife’s condition. Investigators have labeled the death of 53-year-old Karen Higgins as a homicide. Her body has been released to the medical examiner so that an autopsy can determine an exact cause of death. Higgins’ husband, who is disabled, was hospitalized after his wife’s body was found in their home on Anthony Drive. It’s a little weird not knowing exactly what happened,” said neighbor Roy Ramirez. Ramirez said he used to see Higgins outside with her dog. Her body was found inside her own home just after 1 p.m. on Tuesday. Gwinnett County Police were asked to make a welfare check. King , Digital Executive Producer Tuesday, January 12th, 2016, 6:51pm BUFORD, GA (WXIA) – Gwinnett County Police said they were investigating the homicide of a 55-year-old woman, whose body was found in a home in Buford Tuesday afternoon. Investigators said the call came in at about 1 p.m., from a family member of the victim. They said the family member told officers on the scene that he had not heard from the victim recently, so he decided to stop by the home in the 1000 block of Anthony Drive in Buford to check on her. When he arrived, he was able to make contact with the victim’s disabled husband. The family member then said he found the victim’s body inside the home. Investigators said the husband was transported to a local hospital due to his medical condition. They said no suspects have been identified as of this point. A search warrant has been obtained for the home, and detectives, along with the Crime Scene unit are inside the home, as part of the investigation.
